Sooner or later, everyone who does heavy exercise experiences aches and pains.
It’s normal.
I’m not talking about the muscle soreness that is associated with progressive overload that disappears after a few days.
I’m referring to the nagging aches and pains that usually settle in the joints.
The back, shoulders, hips, or knees are usually the target areas.
Cold and damp weather usually magnifies the discomfort.
While it affects those who have never even so much as stepped over a barbell, it really hits those of us who are guilty of slammin’ and bangin’ the heavy stuff in our misspent youth.
So, what do you do about it?
Aspirin along with all sorts of other over-the-counter products can aid in easing the pain.
Topical preparations can be applied to the troubled areas.
Pay more attention to proper warm-up techniques and add stretching exercises to your routines.
If you start experiencing symptoms of overtraining, as I have discussed many times before, TAKE AN EXTRA DAY OFF to recover.
Try changing your training routine from time to time.
And, if you are puzzled as to what exercises, sets, reps, etc., are the most productive when approaching middle age, here’s the best book that will provide you with many of the answers.
The author has been strength training for over 45 years and is still training at over 65 years of age!
To begin, this book has over 50, you read it right, 50 different training programs specifically designed for the mature lifter.
It teaches you how to combine cardio training and strength training.
This is something that is constantly being kicked around and is important for everyone regardless of age.
It explains in detail how to protect your joints.
This alone is worth the price of the book.
